Utah Statewide Online Education Program

Canyons Virtual Academy is a proud participant in Utah’s Statewide Online Education Program (SOEP). This program was established by the 2011 Utah Legislature to help eligible students earn credit toward high school graduation through publicly-funded online courses. Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, Utah students may replace up to six (6) of their traditional, face-to-face course credits with six course credits earned online. Upon request, the State Board of Education may also allow the student to enroll in online courses for more than six online credits if the online courses better meet the academic goals of the student.

Students are considered Out-of-District (OD) if any of the three conditions below apply.  Out-of-District (OD) studentsl need to follow the SEATS registration process through SOEP.

  1. Students with a home school not within Canyons School District boundaries. Students already in Canyons District should go here to register.
  2. Students that attend a private school.
  3. Students that participate in home school.

A student may enroll in an online course at any time during a calendar year.  A student may alter a course schedule at his/her boundary school by dropping a traditional classroom course and adding an online course consistent with course schedule alteration procedures adopted by the student’s boundary school of enrollment deadline for dropping and adding traditional courses.  Regardless, online courses must be recorded in each student’s College and Career Readiness Plan, and require the signature of a counselor and parent/guardian.

Registering with SOEP has three easy steps as shown to the right.  When creating your SOEP account (step 1), be sure to write down your username and password.  To find your courses (step 2), use the CVA course catalog to see our list of courses.  Write down the course names you are interested in for steps 2 and 3).  After completing the three steps, you can then register for courses with CVA.  Click on the image to visit the SOEP site and more details on registering.  Viewing the Utah Administrative Code that defines the Statewide Online Education Program can provide guidance for you in understanding program specifics.

Requirements for all Out of District/SOEP students:

To maintain status in Canyons Virtual Academy (CVA) as an actively participating online student, each CVA student must meet the Standard of Active Participation and demonstrate satisfactory progress in each CVA course in which they are enrolled as described below.

Standard of Active Participation

Each student must:

  1. Login and complete at a minimum of one module in each course every ten (10) days. Students who do not meet this minimum standard will be exited from the course.
  2. Substantially complete and pass the course within a single session (see the Canyons Virtual Academy website for the current Session Calendar). Each session lasts approximately ten weeks.
  3. Students may request one extension if more time is needed to complete a course IF the student has been working consistently in the course since enrolling. Students who do not meet 1 and 2 above may not receive an extension.
  4. Any coursework not completed before the end of the June Session will not roll to the new school year that begins in July. Students will need to enroll in a new course and start over.

Travel Expectations

Communications between Student and Teacher are conducted via email and Google Meet or Zoom meetings.  There is no travel required for completion of coursework.

Each course requires a Proctored Exam to be administered by a CVA test proctor.  Proctored Exams are conducted at every High School in Canyons School District.  Daily testing is offered at The CVA Testing Center located at Diamond Ridge High School.  Students who reside more than 35 miles from the Testing Center will qualify for a virtual test administered through Google Meet or Zoom with a test proctor.  Please call the CVA office to set up an appointment for a virtual exam 801-826-5220.

Canyons Virtual Academy administers required Statewide Assessments to students who do not receive services from their boundary school or are active home or private school students. Statewide Assessments are administered at the CVA testing Center located at 9800 South 800 East in Sandy, Utah. Students will be contacted with testing dates and times for travel to this location.

Satisfactory Progress

Satisfactory progress means a student is meeting the Standard of Active Participation every ten days AND is completing at least 4-5 or more modules each month, depending on when they enroll, to complete the course by the end of the session.

To ensure students are demonstrating satisfactory progress in each course, CVA engages in the following monitoring activities:

  • Weekly: Student activity status reports are reviewed each week to monitor student progress.
  • Biweekly: Students are contacted by phone or email if they have not logged in during the prior 10-day period. In the event a student does not respond by phone call or email or fails to meet the Standard of Active Participation listed above during ten or more consecutive school days, will be withdrawn from the course and placed on Administrative Withdrawal status.
  • Each Session: At the end of each CVA session, students who have met the not completed the course may request an extension of time. Most extensions are granted for an additional session. Students who fail to request an extension are withdrawn from the course and placed on Administrative Withdrawal status.
  • Ongoing: For any student who is in Administrative Withdrawal status, CVA creates a comprehensive report containing each student’s enrollment and progress data. CVA will collect and retain, for a period of 5 years, direct evidence of Learner-Validated enrollment measurements that were used to determine continuous enrollment as described above. This evidence will be accessible regardless of vendor affiliation or other circumstances and will be available to a parent or student upon request.

Home and Private School Students

Please contact our office if you suspect your Canyons Virtual Academy student has a disability and needs special education and related services. Your child may qualify for services even if they are progressing academically each year.

Please be prepared to share with our staff the specific problems your child is having as well as information about your child’s performance and your concerns, along with why you think an evaluation may be needed.

  1. If your child is struggling in school, they may be referred for a special education evaluation. This referral can come from the parent, the school, or the student.
  2. If the parent is requesting an evaluation, the request should be in writing and outlines the concerns and why an evaluation is needed. This will help identify if the student’s education is being negatively impacted by a disability.
  3. Possible outcomes of a referral are that an evaluation process will be initiated, or that an evaluation is not needed.

Canyons School District has a team that can assess students who attend a private school. We also will work with local education agencies (LEA’s) who engage with students who participate in private and homeschool programs and requesting an evaluation.

NOTE:  Canyons Virtual Academy does not offer Competency-Based testing (Test Outs) or Concurrent Enrollment (CE) courses to non-Canyons District students at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
