Credit Options

Three credit options are available through Canyons Virtual Academy. Students must choose one of these options at the time of registering for a course. Use our Canyons Virtual Academy Registration System to register today!

Original Credit

All Students

Canyons Virtual Academy offers original credit to all students in Grades 6-12. Choose Original Credit when taking a course for the first time or for grade replacement to improve your GPA.

  • No skipping content or testing out.
  • Courses must be completed sequentially (NCAA requirement).
  • Letter grades are awarded and recorded on transcripts, affecting GPA, including Driver Education.
  • Original credit course grades are posted to your transcript and are factored into your GPA. This includes the Driver Education course.
  • Courses used the standard Canyons District grading scales:

Credit Recovery Credit

Canyons District Students Only

Canyons Virtual Academy offers credit recovery courses for Canyons District students in Grades 9-12.  Choose Credit Recovery if you need to complete an unfinished course to earn credit (not for grade improvement–see Original Credit).

  • Students can test out of content.
  • Does NOT fulfill NCAA requirements.
Awarded a Pass (P) grade upon completion.
  • Failing grades (59% or below) are not recorded on transcripts.
  • “P – Pass” grades appear on transcripts but do not affect GPA.
  • Non-Canyons (SOEP) students are NOT eligible for Credit Recovery courses/credit. Contact your boundary school for your options.

Competency Exam Credit

Canyons District Students Only

Canyons Virtual Academy offers Canyon District students in Grades 9-12 the option to take a competency exam of a course by taking a comprehensive exam in a proctored setting.

  • Exams may include multiple-choice, essays, and performance tasks.
  • A minimum score of 70% earns a “P – Pass” grade and course credit.
  • Scores below 69% are not recorded, and students may take the full original credit course.
  • Each student may attempt one competency exam per course per academic year (July 1 – June 30).
  • Non-Canyons (SOEP) students are NOT eligible for Competency Exams/credit. Contact your boundary school for your options.
