Program Requirements

For a student to be successful at CVA, both the student and a parent/guardian must review and understand the requirements below. Click each heading below to review each specific requirement before the student begins their CVA course(s). Our shared goal is academic success!

Academic Integrity Agreement
Academic Integrity Agreement

Canyons Virtual Academy values student learning and requires all work submitted to be authentic and original. Any violation of this standard is considered academic misconduct, which includes:

  • Using another person’s work or allowing others to complete coursework
  • Plagiarizing or copying/pasting content from any source and submitting it as your own
  • Submitting incomplete or irrelevant work (25% penalty if resubmitted)
  • Accessing unauthorized sources (apps, internet, notes, other people) during tests or proctored finals
  • Using artificial intelligence tools (e.g., ChatGPT) for assignments or assessments

Academic misconduct undermines your progress and may result in a lower grade, course expulsion, or disqualification from future courses.

Academic Integrity During Testing

The following actions are considered academic integrity violations during testing:

  • Having additional windows or tabs open
  • Using unauthorized electronic devices (phone, smartwatch, calculator, etc.)
  • Copying and pasting content from any source and submitting it as your own work

This list is not exhaustive. Any behavior not aligned with academic integrity may be treated as a violation.

If a violation occurs:
  • The student will be asked to stop the test and submit it immediately.
  • The student must leave the testing facility.
  • The student must complete the Student Online Success workshop within 14 days.
  • The course teacher and parent/guardian will be notified.
  • Future proctored tests must be taken at Diamond Ridge Testing Center.

If a second violation occurs:
  • Parents will be notified. CVA will review the circumstances and determine if the student will be exited from all remaining CVA courses for the remainder of the school year.
Attendance

Utah law requires students to regularly participate in their online courses.  Canyons Virtual Academy tracks and reports student attendance in their online courses.  Attendance is tracked by login time-stamps and student activity logs in the BUZZ learning management system.

What this means for students:

Students must actively participate in each online course every week.  “Attendance” in an online course means the student must submit a minimum of one assignment, quiz, or project per course per week. Students who do not meet this minimum requirement will have their course inactivated. Continued non-attendance will result in the student being withdrawn from the course. Note: students who only meet the minimum attendance requirement will likely not complete the course during the school year. Make sure to review and follow the pacing guide in each course.

Course Reactivation:

We will reactivate a student’s course once per school year for non-attendance without penalty or loss of coursework.  However, all courses end on May 31 of each year, and the work is not retained. To reactivate a course, students must submit a Help Ticket through their Canyons Virtual Academy Registration Account.

State law requires non-traditional programs like CVA to define a “continuing enrollment measure” (see Section R277-419 for details). In response, the Canyons District Board of Education adopted Policy JEB – Pupil Accounting for Non-Traditional Programs, which applies to Canyons Virtual Academy students.

Grade Replacement

Utah State Board of Education Rule R277-717 allows high school students to improve a prior course grade by retaking a course, or completing a comparable one, and earning a higher grade. To replace a prior low grade using a CVA course, students must first submit an Intent to Enroll in a Course for the Purpose of Replacing a Course Grade form with their current school counselor before enrolling in the CVA grade replacement course. After successfully earning a higher grade in the CVA grade replacement course, the student’s current school’s registrar will update the student’s transcript to reflect the higher grade and exclude the lower grade, if applicable.

For questions, contact your current school counselor or registrar before registering for CVA grade replacement courses.

Minimum Completion Time

Canyons Virtual Academy courses are asynchronous, which means a student can progress through the coursework at their own pace. Utah law requires regular interaction with teachers for feedback and evaluation, and CVA courses also involve assignments that must be completed during a scheduled period of time. The minimum completion time for any CVA course will be fourteen (14) days from the day a student enrolls in a course.

Student Code of Conduct

Canyons Virtual Academy students must follow the Canyons School District’s  Student Conduct and Discipline Policy and the Utah State Board of Education’s standards for civil and ethical behavior. Students must:
