About Us

Our Mission

The mission at Canyons Virtual Academy (CVA) is to provide flexible, free, personalized, and proven online learning opportunities to help students throughout Utah succeed and prepare for college and career.

So what does that mean?  CVA provides free, engaging, and highly-interactive courses for students in Grades 6-12, with an accredited curriculum that demonstrates proven outcomes. All instructors are certified and highly-qualified in their respective subjects, offering timely and personalized feedback as students progress at their own pace. Additionally, licensed school counselors and support staff are available to assist both current and prospective students.

Our Background

Founded in 2011, Canyons Virtual Academy (CVA) is an online learning program that caters to thousands of students across Utah, providing year-round education. While CVA operates as a program within the Canyons School District, rather than a traditional school (does not issue high school diplomas), it allows students to earn credits that can count toward graduation requirements at their respective boundary schools.

Our Curriculum

Canyons Virtual Academy (CVA) offers a personalized online learning experience through its customized courses and those from Accelerate Education, all aligned with Utah State and Common Core Standards. The curriculum emphasizes instructional best practices, featuring videos, live and virtual labs, interactive activities, and assessments to ensure student mastery. Supported by highly-qualified Canyons District teachers, students receive comprehensive academic feedback and assistance through various communication methods, preparing them for success in high school, college, and beyond.

Course Registration

Canyons Virtual Academy is a year-round program with at least 5 sessions per academic year.  There are four sessions offered during the traditional academic school year, and one session during the summer (not available for Grades 6-8).

Course registration is organized by sessions, each lasting about one quarter of the academic year.

  • Students in Grades 6-8 must register for all courses for the entire academic year.
    • There are no part-time enrollment options or summer courses available for Grades 6-8.
  • Students in Grades 9-12 can take up to six full credits (24 courses) per year, with online courses integrated into their high school schedule.
    • Students can start any time during a session, provided they finish the course within that same session.
    • A maximum of four courses may be taken simultaneously, and students may not register for two quarters of the same subject concurrently (Math Q1 and Math Q2).
    • Students may need to drop traditional courses to accommodate online courses if their schedule is full.
